Andrew Hope
Andrew was
called to the Bar in 2003 shortly before he joined chambers. Prior to becoming a
barrister he practised as a Solicitor specialising in criminal law, having
qualified in 1991.
He has worked as
a criminal advocate and duty solicitor at a large and well-recognised firm in
Manchester as well as setting up and running a criminal department in the East
End of London.
More recently,
Andrew has completed a Masters in Law, taught criminal law and worked as a
Consultant at one of the largest criminal firms in London.
Criminal work

he
undertakes a wide variety of work in the Crown Court at all levels of
seriousness;

his recent
cases include Murder, Rape, S.18 Wounding, Conspiracy to Defraud Central
Clearing Banks, Importation of Controlled Drugs and Conspiracy to Produce
False Instruments;

he both
defends and prosecutes (on behalf of the CPS and other public as well as
private bodies);

he provides
written advice on a range of criminal issues.
Particular
areas of interest

his
particular areas of interest are mentally disordered and immigration-related
offenders;

he wrote his
Masters’ dissertation on the impact of the Human Rights Act on the detention
of persons suffering from a mental illness in the criminal justice system;

in addition
to representing defendants regarding immigration-related offences, he has
also drafted a series of proposed changes to the Immigration Rules on behalf
of the Immigration Law Practitioners’ Association.
Family
Work
Andrew
also practises in family law. He has experience of public and private Children
Act proceedings as well as ancillary relief.
