Sumita accepts instructions in criminal civil and family cases.

Sumita has developed a criminal defence practice which includes serious violence, dishonestly/fraud, drugs, money laundering and sexual offences. Sumita has been instructed alone and been led in a number of serious cases.

Notable cases
R v. Georgiev, Snaresbrook Crown Court
Led junior in a case where the defendant faced trial for a series of stranger rapes in the east end of London.

R v. Razak, Reading Crown Court
Led junior in this multi- hander case involving conspiracy to supply large consignments of cannabis.

R v. Hall, Oxford Crown Court
Defendant was acquitted of rape and other sexual offences in relation to a minor.

R v. Gouveia, Oxford Crown Court
This was the reported case of the bogus MI5 agent who was jailed for conning his ex – girlfriend!

R v. Paul Darlow, Oxford Crown Court
Court of Appeal reported case law on sentencing for the offence of exposure, where the Court commented upon ‘Miss Mahtab’s earnest and excellent submissions’.

R v. Riasat, Birmingham Crown Court
Led junior involving a family alleged to have conspired together to launder the proceeds of two brothers drug dealing.

R v. I Khan, Canterbury Crown Court
Multi-hander case concerning importation of cocaine, involving PII legal arguments.

Sumita also practices in the areas of housing and landlord and tenant (both residential and commercial). She has extensive experience in possession hearings and also has experience in defending actions brought by social landlords. 


Her practice also comprises conducting county court trials from the small claims track to the multi track in areas ranging from RTA’ s to contractual disputes.

Sumita undertakes all forms of private and public law children work and also accepts instructions in ancillary relief matters, having practised at all levels including the High Court
