Consumer Law Team

Our Consumer Protection Team have of course closely followed developments in the civil enforcement of consumer protection legislation and, in particular, Part 8 Enterprise Act 2002 ("EA2002"). We were particularly pleased that our expertise in this area was recognized by the OFT when they asked us to speak on their behalf at the TSI Conference 2005. Chambers delivered a very well received talk entitled ' Enforcement Orders ? Succeeding in Court. As a result of this we were asked to supervise the OFT's Advanced EA202 Course for trading standards professionals. Sixteen of these courses were delivered.

The success of this training has led to a very significant increase in the use of the EA2002 by the Trading Standards Service and we are pleased that our contribution has helped increase protection for consumers. We are now working on the significance of the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive and the Consumer Protection Regulations which deliver the provisions of the Directive into English and Scottish Law in April 2008.

Our links with local authorities go back well beyond the introduction of the EA2002 and we have substantial experience in the criminal enforcement of consumer protection legislation. As a result we understand the constraints and requirements of local authorities and have a sensible, flexible and transparent fee structure coupled with the ability to respond very quickly when the occasion demands. Uniquely for a London based set of Chambers we have Counsel based across the UK and this is a major factor in our ability to act rapidly ? especially in the often time critical area of consumer protection.
